MORE INFO: Prospering with Juggernaughts Part 1: The Retail Juggernaughts The UK retail market is changing radically. A small number of very powerful international players are carving up the market and their competitors are struggling to survive. In this paper we have suggested one strategy for the traditional retailers to implement that will allow them to differentiate and prosper. The retail juggernaughts like Tesco and Wal-Mart do have their Achilles heels, customer loyalty is suspect, stock outs are very high and staff attrition levels can be enormous. The smart competitors should focus on these three areas and implement a strategy to excel in each of them. To succeed would require a value proposition based on customer intimacy. This would need a culture of continuous improvement, which harnesses the power of every worker in the company especially those most neglected, the frontline sales staff.
