ARTICLE DESCRIPTION: Since 1992, Indian manufacturing firms have faced systematic reduction of import tariffs and barriers, which had protected them against foreign competition for many decades. The recent changes of government have not slowed the programme. Manufacturing firms are assessing their competitive positions while foreign investors increase both opportunities and threats for future success. Serious infrastructure gaps pose major challenges to the development of world-class manufacturing within the country.
