MORE INFO: And Now, For The Benefit Of Our Younger Readers, Particularly Those Just Joining Us Being someone who has spent most of the last 25 years working mostly on the shop floor, in various areas of manufacturing and distribution, I have written this article, perhaps slightly ad hoc, as a gentle palliative for some of the, in my opinion, current over enthusiasm, for sometimes reckless, change and innovation, which is just as often, in my experience, as much cosmetic as real. There remains at the heart of manufacturing a very fundamental conflict of interest, which it is very difficult to reconcile, and one which is seldom addressed, between the men and women who make their living from manufacturing on the shop floor and those people who manage and finance it. It is not, and seems unlikely to ever to be in the prevailing climate, in the interest of someone on an hourly wage, (as opposed to someone on a salary, or someone who has money invested in a company,) to support any process innovation which by improving efficiency or productivity, reduces staffing levels or more particularly over time payments, which remain of critical importance to everyone on a low hourly rate.
