MORE INFO: The Manufacturing Manager This is a very substantial hardback book of nearly 940 pages and priced at £95. It has twenty chapters relating to important subjects for managers in industry and this averages to only about 50 pages per subject. Sir John Harvey-Jones has said that the book contains the most all-encompassing coverage of the theories and practice that he has ever encountered, and as well as the mainstream topics there are three chapters on company legal and managerial frameworks, finance and costing, and human resources. Rather than presenting 'exciting new corporate theories ', the author has sought to write a book for managers which contains solid facts and - established ideas presented in a straightforward manner; and the book should become the constant companion and reference of the manager who owns it. The chapters cover sales and marketing, product innovation, sales forecasting and safety stocks, master plan formulation and management, assemble-to-order, materials planning, closed-loop MRP, shop floor control, advanced planning systems, total quality control, statistical quality control, just-in-time, purchasing, stores and stock records, distribution -a comprehensive list of functions. The subject matter is well illustrated with figures, tables and mathematical formulae which are explained using simple numerical examples, and there are also many references to other literature. The book does not include direct case study or practical material and perhaps tends towards scholarship; Some people may find the presentation rather heavy going. Obviously individual readers will make their own decisions.
