ARTICLE DESCRIPTION: This article is based upon some initial research into World Class Manufacturing (WCM) and the business measures needed in such an environment. From the literature, a consensus definition of the term 'world class' is gained and the dramatic differences in levels of achievement between WCM companies and non world class traditional manufacturers are highlighted. It then examines the external competitive factors affecting manufacturing companies and the internal organisational elements which influence their abilities to achieve in these areas.
